What is Botox?

Botox is a purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Botox is actually a brand name for the bacterium. While Botox is generally used for aesthetic purposes, it is also used for medical purposes in order to treat certain conditions.

It has been used in the cosmetic industry for a while now and doctors have been successfully using Botox for many years, especially to treat frown lines and wrinkles. It’s used specially to improve the overall appearance of the face and to reduce the signs of aging. Botox can help relax the face muscles which in turn leads to the reduction of the fine lines and wrinkles appearing on the face.

How does Botox work?

Botox, when injected into the muscles, causes them to paralyze. It does so by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles. The muscles then cannot contract. It temporarily blocks the junctions between the nerves and the muscles which leads to the paralysis and hence the reduction of the lines/wrinkles. Botox does not create results overnight. It initially causes the wrinkles and the lines to soften and they are further reduced over a week to ten days. The breaking of the tie between the nerves and the muscles is the key to this treatment and this cannot happen immediately. It involves altering the usual system that the body follows so to break this bond and adapt to the form, the body will take time. The lines begin softening and will then fade away.

The biological balance of the body then tries to restore itself, like a plant that wants to grow or like a growing baby, the body starts recreating the system, in order to restore the distorted balance. Between a period of three to six months, the muscles begin working again. The results wear off and this signifies that it is time for another treatment so as to prevent the return of the original wrinkles and fine lines.

Botox can help alter your face temporarily without the need for any surgery.

What areas can Botox treat?

Botox is most commonly used to treat lines, crow’s feet, lip lines, forehead lines, the corners of the mouth and even the chin area. Botox does not, however, respond to the wrinkles as a result of skin laxity caused by gravity or sun-damage.

Botox can help in reducing the appearance of fine lines that constitute the signs of aging and can lend the face a more youthful look, showing visible improvements.

How does the treatment work?

The Botox treatment is relatively simple. Botox is injected into the desired area with a fine needle; inserted only into a specific muscle(s). It does not cause much pain; only minor discomfort is felt by the patient.

Since the treatment is not very painful, no anesthesia or numbing agents are required.

The muscles treated then disconnect from the nerves and the treatment tends to calm down the overactive muscles so the visible signs of aging can be reduced.

Is the Botox procedure safe?

Botox is relatively safe. Since it is not a surgical treatment, the risk involved is minimal. But one must ensure that the treatment is undertaken under the supervision of a trained and experienced doctor so that the risks are reduced. An experienced professional is able to make sure that Botox is injected in the right amount and in the correct area.

How long does it take to show results?

Since Botox deals with the disruption of the natural order of things, it cannot show results right away. People should not go in for a treatment hoping for instant results. It takes time for the muscles and the nerves to disconnect. Since Botox aims at controlling overactive muscles and helps in reducing wrinkles and fine lines caused by constant muscle pulling, it needs time to develop after it is introduced in the muscles. It can usually be seen coming into effect in three to seven days of injection.

What if I stop having my Botox injections?

If the Botox injections are stopped, the lines will start to reappear. The muscles revive themselves and the skin starts functioning the way it usually did before. The skin will start reflecting the fine lines, wrinkles and other issues that were treated. One Botox injection usually lasts for about four to six months.
