Everything You’ve Always Wanted to Know About a Vampire Facial

The vampire facial, which is also known as PRP microneedling, is a new procedure that really has people talking.

A vampire facial involves drawing blood from the patient, placing the blood in a centrifuge that will separate the platelets and injecting the plasma into the face to create a smoother, more youthful appearance.

This unique facial offers an array of benefits but it generally also leaves people with a lot of questions. If you’re considering a vampire facial, this is what you need to know.

What you need to know about the vampire facial

What is a vampire facial exactly?

Once the patient’s blood has been separated from the plasma, a microneedling device is used to create micro-injuries to the skin. This platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is then injected into the skin to create new collagen, break up any scar tissue and give the face a more youthful appearance.

What is the difference between traditional microneedling and PRP microneedling?

Both treatments are used to improve the texture of the skin and reduce wrinkles but there is a difference in the recovery time for each procedure. While the redness from traditional microneedling can last up to a week, vampire facials only require about a day or two of downtime. This is because of the PRP that is used in the vampire facial.

What are the benefits of a vampire facial?

At Verve, a cosmetic clinic in Sydney, vampire facials are used to stimulate collagen and treat skin texture issues. It is also highly beneficial for patients with acne or surgical scars as it stimulates deep tissue healing.

Who should get a vampire facial?

The vampire facial is well suited to all skin types and anyone who is looking to improve the overall appearance of their skin on a deep level.

What can I expect during my facial?

To document your progress and results, your doctor will take some photographs before proceeding with the treatment. Your doctor will then use a cream to numb the face and withdraw around 11ml of blood, which will then be placed in a centrifuge. Microneedling can now begin. Your vampire facial shouldn’t last longer than 90 minutes and it’s important not to wash the PRP off your face until the morning after your treatment as it will heal the skin overnight. Patients can expect a healthy glow a few days after their treatment but the full results of your treatment can be seen around 4 – 6 weeks after your facial.

How should I care for my face after my vampire facial?

Once you’ve rinsed the platelet-rich plasma off your face the next day, you can use a very gentle facial cleanser to wash the face and follow this up with a moisturizer that contains a broad-spectrum SPF. This will ensure that your skin is protected. An added bonus would be to use a hyaluronic serum to keep the skin hydrated for the next week. Thereafter, you can resume your usual skincare routine.
